PRELIMINAR PROGRAM

(Tuesday-13th to Thursday-15th of July 2010)

Important: classes in Tuesday and Wednesday will be in Spanish. On Thursday, in English. No simultanely translation in both cases.

Tuesday, July 13th 2010.
10 to 14 hours

Professor: Conrado Xalabarder
Theme: Theorical and practical principles of the music for the Audiovisual


The class of this first day will be with professor Conrado Xalabarder, one of the most renowed specialist in film music, teacher of "Bandas Sonoras" (Film Music) at the Universities Pompeu Fabra and Vic, author of various books, de diversos libros, collaborator in Fotogramas Magacine and in the Magacine of the Spanish's Film Academy, and creator of one of the world's biggest film music websites,  www.mundobso.com

It will be around the theorical and practical principles of the music for the audiovisual. The students will receive, in PDF printable format, his book “Música de Cine: una ilusión óptica” (Film Music: an Optical Illusion), that should had been read before the workshop.

Also, this films will be analyzed and commented:

  1. Up (Pete Docter, Bob Peterson, 2009). Music: Michael Giacchino
  2. Låt Den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One In. Tomas Alfredson, 2008). Music: Johan Sordeqvist
  3. Los abrazos rotos (Broken Embraces. Pedro Almodóvar, 2009). Music: Alberto Iglesias

It will be a morning where the analysis through debate will be fomented among the students.

Professor: Mikel Fernández Krutzaga
Theme: Processes of Recording and Sonorization of a soundtrack

The afternoon will be with Mikel Fernández Krutzaga, prestigious sound technician that has worked with some of the most representative musicians of the Vasque musical scenery (Kepa Junkera, Iñaki Salvador, Mikel Urdangarin...), as well as some recognized international musicians like Flaco Jiménez, Gwendal , John Renbourn  or Liam O´flynn etc. In 2004 he won a Grammy Award as sound engineer for his collaboration in the album K by Kepa Junkera. He has worked in many recordings of film music, in films such as No me pidas que te bese porque te besaré (Aritz Villodas), Cher Ami (Manel Gil), or in different titles by, among others, Ángel illarramendi, Bingen Mendizábal , Pascal Gaigne or Aitor Amezaga. He is working actually in the recording and score mixing of the videogame music for Castlevania: Lords of the Shadows, composed by Oscar Araujo.

Mikel Fernández Krutzaga will talk about the recording and sound process.

Professor: Ruben Díez
Theme: Analysis of the Orchestral and Formal developing in film music

Rubén Díez Fernández was born in Avilés, Asturias (Spain) in 1977. He is Orchestral and Choir conductor, as well as composer and pianist. He will talk about the analysis of the musical structures, orchestration, harmonization, and motif developments in film music, linking the to the classical harmonies and orchestration. It will be explained, from a musicological point of view, why several scenes sound to a concrete thematic, and the orchestral and harmonic resources typical in various composers.

This session will complement the one of the preceding day, and at the same the students will have the opportunity to present their audiovisual works, and engage into an open discussion about writing music for films. Also, there will be presented several examples of musical solutions to specific problems in films.

Professor: Oscar Araujo
Theme: The
Audiovisual Composition in Videogames

Oscar Araujo. Autodidact composer, author of the scores of El Cid. La leyenda (2003), Gisaku (2006) and Aparecidos (2007), he has a broad experiencie in the music for advertisement, but his biggest prestige comes from videogames music: he is author for the music of titles such as Blade of Darkness (2001), Jericho (2009) and actually he is working in the big production Castlevania: Lords of the Shadows, from the Spanish studio MercurySteam in collaboration with Japan's Hideo Kojima.

Araujo wil talk about music for videogames.

Talk by composer Luis Ivars, member of the rotatory presidency of FFACE (European Association of Composers for the Audiovisual Media). 

His talk will be about the rights and the associations of composers.

Professor: Iván Llopis
Theme: The Audiovisual Composition in the Advertisement


Iván Llopis, besides having written the music for several short films, and being this year finalist for second consecutive year to the Jerry Goldsmith Awards, has a broad experience in the advertisement field. He is the author, among others, of the 2008-2009 Freixenet Christmas campaign music.

Llopis will talk about the musical creation for advertisement.

Professor: Sergio de la Puente
Theme: The Audiovisual Composition in Animated Films

Sergio de la Puente. Three times finalist for the Jerry Goldsmith Awards and preselected for the Oscar for El lince perdido, he has publised some albums with his muisc, and has signed the scores of numerous short films, and actually he is working in his second animated feature film, Goleor, again under the direction of Manuel Sicilia.

De la Puente will talk about the creating process in animated films.

Professor: Michael Giacchino
Theme: Analysis and comments on the works made by the students

Michael Giacchino will attend, in groups and by order, those students that have composed music for any of the proposed videos. The rest of groups will assist to the class by Nathan Barr in other room, and will be called in previously determined order to attend Giacchino's class. All, without disturbing Mr. Barr's talk.
